Name: Window Restoration
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Problem: We were invited by Roofed Right America to restore eleven original, double hung wooden windows on the fourth floor of the building. These windows all had several areas of deterioration, mechanical issues, and the paint was loose and flaky. In order to complete all the work needed on these original windows we had to adhere to the expectations of the Historic Society and the state of Wisconsin.
Solution Provided: We began the project by extracting the windows, and since we are a Milwaukee county based business we brought them to our shop in Shorewood, Wisconsin. Once here in our shop we removed the caulk on both interior sashes, and on the lower sashes had to remove the glass to get the old caulk fully removed. We re-caulked the glass, and any area of damage on the wood we repaired with epoxy. As the epoxy putty hardened to shape we sanded the windows to shape and applied primer and paint to the windows. The windows were ready to be transported back to Madison and were ready to be reinstalled after completing the rest of the restoration projects in the window frame and building exterior.
At the Historical Society building our crew had quite a few projects to complete prior to restored window installation. We began by removing all the loose paint covering the exterior sill, brick moulding and window jamb, including the paint on the brass pulleys. On the jamb and sill we applied epoxy putty to any areas of rot or deterioration, and once the epoxy set sanded and applied primer and the first coat of paint. We also applied the same coat of primer and first coat of paint to the windows exterior sashes, and now it was time to install the restored windows. After our team installed all the restored, original wooden double hung windows we applied the 2 finishing coats of paint to both the interior and the exterior. To finish the project our crew applied new caulk and replaced all of the interior window casing trim. We had specific guidelines to follow, and to confirm all of our work was acceptable we filmed each step in our process on one window pending approval prior to beginning work on the majority.
