Name: Airing Porch & Cedar Shingles

Problem: Old Airing Deck Needs to be Rebuilt Larger and the Cedar Shingles on West Exterior Needed to be Replaced.

Solution Provided: First we removed all the existing cedar shingles on the back west side of the home. For the airing porch we removed the original structure by demolishing the deck, columns, and brackets. Then we installed 2 new footings. In addition to rebuilding the deck we also expanded its footprint to make it 12” wider. To support the new size of the deck we installed 6×6 columns, decking to footing, and the columns were clad, primed and painted with 2 coats of paint. For the deck we used ipe wood, so to prepare the material our team pre-oiled the wood before installation. We built a brand new 36” rail system, and it was made to match the home’s front porch railways. Additionally, we added 3 Newel posts with decorative caps and installed the new balustrade. To finish the porch we caulked any area in need and touched up the paint.  Returning back to the cedar shingles, we evaluated the underlayment and sheet to assess any level of deterioration or rot. For any area(s) affected we restored or repaired the area, prepped the area for the new cedar shingles. Once ready we installed the new cedar shingles, which is a custom color courtesy of the homeowners. To finish the project we installed new custom flashing for the door and windows.
