Interview with Kevin Welker, Carpentry Manager at Thoughtful Craftsmen

How many years have you been in the industry?

Kevin: 25 years

Are you an early bird or night owl?

Kevin: Early bird

What were your first jobs?

Kevin: I worked at True Value Hardware, then building houses with my father

What’s the biggest misconception about your industry?

Kevin: That only men are good at it

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Kevin: *Laughs* let’s see, advice, more patience and understanding

What’s the one thing people don’t know about you?

Kevin: I’m a lifelong musician. I play the drums. I made it my full time job for a long time. My latest band has a couple albums. We opened up for a number of well known bands … played all over the place. Floog was our band’s name. By definition it’s like to be abrasive or uncooperative. There was a time where we had a choice to go on the road, but we just played wherever we could – just a couple days here or there – weekend warriors because we all had careers. I’ve been playing drums since I was 8. First band was when I was 15 years old – we played bars, clubs, and weddings.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

Kevin: Probably, my mom had said to me “You’re your own man now”
